Olive Garden restaurant chain applies for building permit
Olive Garden Italian Restaurant, a popular chain Outside, applied this week for a building permit for a restaurant in the Tikahtnu Commons mall in East Anchorage, said city building official Jerry Weaver, director of community development for the municipality.
But Cook Inlet Region Inc., partner in ownership of the mall, is not ready to confirm they're coming.
"All I can say is we've been in ongoing talks with Olive Garden," said CIRI spokesman Jim Jager. "At this point I don't have a deal to announce."
He said that later this month he hopes to announce final deals with both a restaurant and a "junior anchor" -- a store smaller than Target or Kohl's, but bigger than a shop.
In addition, FireTap Alehouse, a South Anchorage restaurant, and McDonald's are opening restaurants in Tikahtnu Commons, Jager said. A Qdoba Mexican restaurant is also planned, he said.
CIRI and Browman Development Co. Inc. of Walnut Creek Calif., are partners in the mall. It opened in 2008 with Target and is now about two-thirds built, with about 600,000 square feet of stores on a 95-acre site, Jager said.
