Free admission at Heritage Center for Mothers Day

Multiple award-winning Native American musician and writer Joy Harjo will take part in the opening-day performances at the Alaska Native Heritage Center on Sunday. Admission on that day is free.
The center traditionally opens on Mother's Day. This year -- the center's 12th anniversary -- the free day is sponsored by Target.

Harjo, of Oklahoma, has previously worked with the center in various roles. She supplied the narration for the documentary "Games of the North," which was produced in part by the center and aired last month on public television.

She first came to national attention as a poet and has won an American Book Award and the William Carlos Williams Award for poetry. Her 1984 collection, "She Had Some Horses," is considered a classic in some quarters and has gone through four editions. Her recent children's book, "For a Girl Becoming," won the 2010 Moonbeam Children's Book Award, a national prize for exceptional work promoting literacy among young people.

As a musician, Harjo has released several CDs and was named Best Female Artist at the Native American Music Awards in 2009.

In addition to Harjo, Mother's Day events at the center will include Native dancing and games demonstrations, children's art activities, films and a special presentation by the Bird Treatment and Learning Center.

The center's summer hours will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Sept. 5. General admission after this Sunday will be $24.95. Tickets that also include admission to the Anchorage Museum will be $28.95.

The museum, at 625 C St., will also start its summer schedule on Sunday. Summer hours will be 9 a.m.-6 p.m. daily through Sept. 11.
